Our History
Park Maitland

Home / About Us / History

A Legacy That Began in 1968

Park Maitland was founded in 1968 by Mrs. Nell Cohen as a private school in Maitland, Florida, rooted in academic excellence and a deep love and respect for each child. That founding philosophy still shapes our close-knit community today.

Over the decades, Park Maitland has become a trusted place for families seeking a small-school environment with high expectations, meaningful traditions, and an unwavering commitment to developing the whole child.

Park Maitland has grown alongside the families we serve. In 1996, our South Campus in Winter Park, Florida opened, welcoming students ages 1 year through 5th grade.

In 2020, Park Maitland Preschool in Winter Park opened, serving children ages 2 through Pre-K. The preschool combines learning and play in a fun, safe, and nurturing child care environment.

Park Maitland traditionally served students from preschool through 6th grade, and has continued to expand to meet the needs of families seeking a longer, continuous school experience. Seventh grade was added in August 2022, followed by eighth grade in the 2023-2024 school year. With more than 50 years of experience, Park Maitland continues to evolve while staying rooted in the values and traditions that have defined the school for generations.

What Makes Park Maitland Unique

A defining part of the Park Maitland experience is departmentalized learning, where students learn from passionate content experts rather than generalists. This model encourages strong engagement and supports a rigorous academic environment that promotes a student-centered focus.

Park Maitland also emphasizes project-based learning aligned to national academic standards. These projects are brought to life through interdisciplinary experiences such as the Wax Museum, State Travel Fair, and Greek Fest. They help children build communication skills, including meaningful opportunities for presentations and public speaking as they grow.

Innovation Recognized in 2024

In 2024, Park Maitland was honored as an Apple Distinguished School, a title given to only 1,000+ schools in 40 countries. This recognition reflects our commitment to innovation and purposeful technology use. We use technology in daily activities to drive creative thinking, foster teamwork, and tailor learning to each child’s needs.

A Culture of Kindness, Belonging, and Tradition

Park Maitland celebrates differences and focuses daily on manners, kindness, and respect. Our community is strengthened by traditions that connect students across years, including our Festival of Nations, Across Generations, India Fest, performances at every grade level, and community service opportunities, such as Feeding Children Everywhere and our annual food and toy collection drives. Many families have multiple generations who have attended Park Maitland, which reflects our lasting impact and strong reputation in the local community.

Looking Ahead

While holding tradition close, Park Maitland continues to evolve to serve today’s learners. Today, Park Maitland is a part of Spring Education Group. Spring Education is a network of private schools dedicated to delivering outstanding educational outcomes to more students across America. This has allowed Park Maitland to maintain its community-focused approach while benefiting from the shared resources and best practices of a larger organization.
